We are a collection within the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, without a permanent home. We want to keep moving. We want to keep the donation engaged in a dialogue with other works and contexts.

History of the collection

Collection history and donation: The beginnings of the Hoffmann Collection date back to the 1960s. Initially based in Mönchengladbach and later in Cologne, the Hoffmanns were closely connected to the Rhineland’s vibrant art scene. Like many private collections, this one was born out of the desire to have a close and active relationship to the works of art. The motivation to buy one of the works always came from the direct and intensive interaction with the art and often also with the artists, whose work the collector couple often accompanied over a longer period of time. The Hoffmanns were fascinated by the diversity of artistic expression, which they saw as an essential characteristic of contemporary art. They looked for innovation, regardless of which medium was being used. And their involvement with contemporary art also offered them the opportunity to confront current social issues.

Sammlungsgeschichte 3

After the death of her husband in 2001, Erika Hoffmann continued collecting and she expanded the focus towards Eastern Europe. The collection has been accessible to the public since 1997. Every Saturday, a guided tour through the collection’s Berlin rooms shows visitors the annually changing exhibitions. Due to ongoing delays in establishing a central depot for all SKD museums, in the fall of 2023, the SKD started by taking on a carefully curated selection of significant works that complement the existing collections. The rest of the holdings will remain in Berlin and will be available for the established exhibition programmes of the Hoffmann Collection.
