As part of the 2022 Hoffmann Collection Research Fellowship, art historian Franziska Wilmsen investigated the relationships between Erika Hoffmann-Koenige and the female artists represented in the collection. The starting point for Wilmsen’s observations is the exchange between the collector and the artists, as well as the possible reasons for an interest in specific works. The aim of the study is to shed light on gender-specific aspects of networking between artists and collectors and to examine the communicative strategies of women in the art world from the 1980s to the recent past. The essay “Enge Verbindungen schmieden. Die Beziehungen zwischen Erika Hoffmann und den Künstlerinnen der Sammlung Hoffmann” (Forging Close Connections. The relationships between Erika Hoffmann and the female artists of the Hoffmann Collection) summarises the results of the research.

In the summer of 2021, art historian Jeannette Brabenetz investigated the practice of collecting, exhibiting and mediating as a socio-political act of subversion as practised by the Hoffmann collector couple in the Sophie-Gips-Höfe. As part of a three-month research grant from the Hoffmann Collection, she also observed how this approach affected traditional museum concepts as the collection transitioned from a private collection to a public one. The results of her research are summarised in the essay “Vom Verschwenden und Verschwinden” (On Wasting and Disappearing).

By selecting the research project by Stephanie Regenbrecht (Hamburg), the jury decided in favour of a topic that focuses on the history of the collection. Regenbrecht investigates the interplay and the reciprocal influences of collecting, living and exhibiting as a specific feature of the Hoffmann Collection since its relocation from the Rhineland to Berlin in 1997.

The results of her research are summarised in the essay “Vorher waren wir namenlos - BAUEN WOHNEN DENKEN mit der Sammlung Hoffmann” (We used to be nameless – BUILDING LIVING THINKING with the Hoffmann Collection).
